DIED. Northrop Frye, 78, Canadian critic and professor best known for his analysis of literary archetypes, Anatomy of Criticism; in Toronto. Frye first made his mark in 1947 with Fearful Symmetry, his pioneering study of the English Romantic poet William Blake. In literature, Frye contended, the recurrence of such common images as the sea or the forest can be understood only as archetypes connecting one poem with another, thus integrating our reading.
